5 Tips for a Perfect Instagram Caption

I am feeling extra helpful this week, so here are my top five tips for social media writing on Instagram. Instagram and writing? What? Yes, your captions are important! They can make or break the brand you are trying to create or the message you are trying to send to your audience.

So, you have your picture, now what?

1. BE VALUABLE

Inform, assist or entertain. The caption to an Instagram post gives you a chance to explain what you are posting or give more context. Your audience wants something out of this post, so give them some some good content: picture and caption.

2. THE HASHTAG

Hashtags are #important. According to Kevan Lee, the optimal length of a hashtag is six characters. Do not write sentence-long hashtags, rather, use a keyword or phrase to make your post more discoverable and noticeable.

3. A/B TESTING

A/B testing helps you refine your content and your social media strategy. Christina Newberry emphasizes that A/B testing allows you, the creator, to fully understand what works and what doesn’t work. Think: does your caption get more attention if it has emojis, or does it get more attention without emojis?

4. BE CLEVER

Do not overestimate the power of a caption. Judge what type of language attracts the most attention from your audience. Language type may vary per personal brand, but be witty and engaging, ask your audience to tag a friend, comment what their reaction is or if they have any questions.

5. BE GRACIOUS

Your goal is engagement, so if someone positively comments on your photo, respond back to them and thank them for their support. Interact with your audience, your caption and photo were meant to get their attention. Although, note Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick make a good point, stay positive or stay silent when replying.

  1. I really like the point of “Be gracious.” As you said, the goal is to get the caption to draw attention and interacting. Staying silent or positive are great areas of advise. Thank you for your blog! Very helpful!
